LA City Councilman Paul Koretz, introduced a motion this past week that would ban the sale of puppy mill & kitty mill animals at pet stores across the city. He wants to enact this piece of legislation in order to curb the widespread problem of pet over population in Los Angeles. By ending this practice, he hopes that it will make room for other adoptable pets, like those suffering in the overcrowded city shelters, the opportunity to find homes.
So far this year, the LA county animal shelters have taken in over 16,000 dogs & cats, and at this rate, the number could surpass the total number of dogs and cats impounded in 2010-56,000! Out of those who went into the shelter system, only a fraction of those were adopted out. Many adoptable animals were euthanized due to lack of space and low demand. By outlawing the practice of selling puppy & kitty mill pets, the hope is that pet stores could work with animal shelters and increase the awareness and number of pet adoptions.
