A VOLUNTEER WROTE: If you want a reminder of what real rescuing is all about, look no further than Mamita, a 2 year old hound mix known for her perpetually worried look and sweet, vulnerable brand of affection. Mamita did not test well enough for the adoption rooms (it was her first day at the shelter, after all), but she has won the hearts of staff and volunteers here, and more than one person will tell you that she can and will blossom under some kindness and a good meal. She's a nervous, submissive sort of dog, but she loves to lean into her handler, quietly, for protection and security. She has no real handling issues (she may shrink from real sudden movements from people without common sense), she is social, and she appears to be good with dogs, as well. She's a delicate rose, shut into a bud at the moment but ready to bloom. If you have seen dogs like this before---and I know we all have--Mamita will be a joy to discover. A VOLUNTEER WROTE: Mellie is a 1.5 yo female Rotweiler at the shelter since 8/20/2010. She appears healthy and weighs 53lbs. Mellie together with a housemate cat, was brought to the shelter as her owner was evicted. She is quite a beautifull Rotie . She is rather thin but her coat is healthy and her markings striking. She does not really behave like a Rotie. When she sees a potential caretaker, she rushes to her door and wiggle like a Pitie. A little Chameleon picking up good habit from her neighbour. She knows what works. Mellie is good on the leash and seems to be housetrained. She is very friendly and likes to be petted all over. She is patient and obeys simple commands. She is interested in other dogs and goes toward them then stops and comes back to her caretaker. She takes food very gently from the hand. She is quite an endearing dog. Her owner surrendered her as the landlord would not allow her anymore and she is understandably confused and nervous about her circumstances. She is a little shy about coming out of her kennel, but once she does, and she knows that you are a friend - WOW! Sheba wins the kissing contest! She is a snuggler, a lover, a kisser and a hugger. She sits immediately when you ask her to and gives her paw. Immediately after that she leans in and rolls over for a belly rub and her beautiful face lights up with a big smile. She walks great on the leash, right by my side. And, while walking she is constantly looking up and kissing my hand!! Sheba has a nice shiny coat and seems to have been well cared for. We met a few dogs in the yard and she seemed friendly to all of them. She loves people and greeted everyone with a tail wag and a kiss. Sheba is so special - I am smitten!!! She appears housetrained as she relieved herself as soon as we were outside. I could go on and on but will run out of space. G – A738013 – 3 yr old NEUTERED pittie mix – 52lbs – OS. A volunteer wrote: Let me introduce you to G, a sweet black and white pittie with one letter to his name, but 3 stays in our shelter. That's correct: this is the third time in his 3 years that G has been surrendered to the ACC, and it's about time he received a truly dedicated forever home. At 52lbs, G is depressed to be in the shelter, a little shy at first, but really brightens up when he gets out for his walk. When he posed for his pictures, he even raised his paw to say hello. G behaves well on the leash, pulling at first in excitement at his brush with freedom, but by the time we got halfway around the block, he was walking calmly at my side. As I look at his baby picture from 2007 when he first arrived in the shelter, I can tell you that this boy deserves a loving chance at real peace, and should never find his way back here again. But then, I was blown away by how cute this little puppy is: an 8 month-old reddish-tan Shepherd/Pittie mix, Van Gough has cute little wrinkles on his cheeks and forehead, and a v-shaped cut off the tip of his right ear. His tongue, however, is extremely large, and could really double as a third ear. No matter how hard he was panting in the hot sun, Van Gough never got tired of climbing onto my lap over and over, just trying to get close enough to kiss me. Full of rambunctious puppy energy, Van Gough needs basic puppy training, but I was impressed by how much he listened to me when I corrected him, and would repeatedly look up at me while walking for reassurance.
