Embarking on the journey of motherhood is amazing. And scary, unexpected, exhausting, exhilarating, and the list goes on. Especially in the first 24 hours of becoming a mother for the first time. The hormones are raging, a woman’s body is trying to figure out what is going on and there is a new baby or babies in the mix. It’s overwhelming at times. And British photographer Jenny Lewis aims to capture all of the emotions of the first 24 hours of motherhood in her ongoing series, One Day Young.
The series stars real life mothers with their firstborn babies in the first 24 hours of the children’s lives. Her idea was to show the transition from a woman’s former life to her new role as a mom. And her pictures are amazing!
The women also she their personal journeys to and in motherhood. And their stories are compelling, covering topics such as postpartum depression, the birthing process and when the natural maternal instincts kick in. Here is an excerpt from one of the stories from a mother named Jenny Green:
“I had been so worried about being alone with my baby – that I wouldn’t know what to do, that I wouldn’t understand her needs. But, when that moment came, I felt a new confidence I hadn’t ever expected.
I lay with her in my arms and looked at her for hours, and all of my own feelings of fear disappeared. I just couldn’t believe how much I loved her. In the days that followed I felt for the first time in my life I wanted time to stand still.”
