This is such a cool idea that has been put into action! As many of you know, access to clean drinking water is a challenge and even impossible for a vast number of people (up to 1 billion!) in various parts of the world like Ethiopia. Due to this, a huge number of individuals (mostly children) in these areas die (1 child every 15 seconds) of water-borne diseases. Well now a group of like minded individuals have all come together starting January 7th for the Summit on the Summit, to climb Africa’s highest peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, so they can raise awareness about the need for clean drinking water. And who is climbing? This charitable effort was created by Grammy nominated artist and Ethiopia native Kenna, and the climbing team includes a variety of people from various fields like actors Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch, and Isabel Lucas, singer Lupe Fiasco, National Geographic Emerging Explorer and granddaughter of legendary explorer Jacques Cousteau–Alexandra Cousteau, Momentum Worldwide CEO Chris Weil, as well as a UN Humanitarian, a photographer, a mountain guide, a personal trainer, and other experts.
And why climb a mountain to shed light on this pressing global issue? As Kenna states on the website,”We are doing this extreme thing to qualify the extreme nature of the issue. We are willing to go to one of the highest points in the world to get your attention on the biggest problem we have ever faced.” The climbers will have an HP computer with Microsoft Windows Expedition Software in their arsenal to document their 7 day, 50 mile journey as they ascend the highest freestanding mountain in the world while benefiting several organizations including Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, UN Refugee Agency, Water For People, and For the Greater Good Foundation. All along the climbers and experts will discuss this problem and attempt to come up with solutions to this critical problem.
