Hurricane Irene has come and gone. And because of the preparedness of the government and citizens in the affected areas, there was a relatively low number of human causalities. Also, many evacuation centers along the Eastern Seaboard accommodated both humans and their pets, a far cry from the days after Hurricane Katrina, when so many lives were lost. But there is still a significant amount of damage in the low-lying areas of North Carolina, namely in Pamlico County. Thousands of people have lost their homes due to flooding over ten feet, and rescue teams have witnessed crushed cars, boats in front yards, fallen trees, and various debris scattered around the area. Because of the damage to the power grid, power isn’t supposed to be generated for over one month and water service has been shut down.

The HSUS Animal Rescue Team has been working around the clock since the hurricane hit, to ensure that injured, orphaned, and stray animals are getting the help that they need. For instance, a horse wandering down the street in NC was rescued, dogs have been pulled off of debris, and orphaned kittens, pups, and even squirrels have been taken in and cared for.
