Summer is right around the corner, and that means it is time for the Cannes Film Festival! We all know that Cannes is about three things: the movies, the parties, and of course, the celebrities. Here are some of the key movies you should look forward to and the parties you will hear all about.
-Sofia Coppola’s “The Bling Ring”, will make its debut at the festival, staring Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, and Leslie Mann. The movie based on the famous teenagers burglars who broke into celebrity homes including Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, and many others. The movie is bound to create some thrill and is for sure a do not miss!
-Behind The Candelabra, starring Matt Damon and Michel Douglas, is a flick which some might see as controversial, but no doubt, it will be a huge draw at the festival.
-“Only Lovers Left Alive” directed by Jim Jamusch will spark all of those vampire fans out there. The director describes it as a “crypto-vampire love story”. A vampire tries to reunite with an ex lover…but something goes awry along the way.
-The Immigrant: directed by James Gray who has competed before at the festival. With a plot that is set in the 1920’s in New York, the film’s cast includes Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Renner, and Joaquin Phoenix.
-And for the inner historian, you might want to check out “Jimmy P” directed by the French director Arnaund Desplechin which will mark his fifth production. The film shows the journey of a Native American and his therapist that is trying to help him adjust back to his normal lifestyle.
-Alexander Payne, will now unveil a film of his own this year. “Nebraska”, a black and white film that displays an alcoholic father traveling to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim money.
-“Un Chateau en Italie” –helmed by the only female director,Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, in this year’s competition, and she is not only behind the scenes but also in front of the camera. A dramatic comedy about family troubles, it sounds like something we can all relate too.
-“Fruitvale Station” which won big at Sundance, is also making an appearance at Cannes. It is a drama which shows the life in inner-city Oakland.
While these amazing movies are something not to miss…the parties are truly what brings the excitement to the festival.
-Nikki Beach will be located at Les Terrasse ou Les Marches. Celebrities known to grace around Nikki Beach with their presence include Penelope Cruz, Ryan Gosling, and more. The Les Marches location will display a Special Edition Remy Martin Box that will compose of four bottles signed by the jury members from 2010-2013.
-The Great Gatsby will be screened 3-D on May 15 at the glamorous Grant Theatre Lumiere of the Palais des Festivals. Leonardo DiCaprio the star of the movie…could in fact be the star of event.
-Calvin Klein’s event at L’ecrin Beach will be celebrating the partnership of the brand IFP. Joana Vicente and Francisco Costa will be co-hosting. And Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara, Carey Mulligan, Naomie Harris are on the list!
-amfAR’s black-tie event will be held on May 23 at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc. The swanky event will consist of a cocktail reception, dinner, auction, fashion show, and of course, an after party. In previous years, George Clooney planted a smooch on a lucky auction bidder, and Elton John and Ringo Star have even given impromptu performances…this event is one not to miss.
