West Hollywood, CA could possibly become the first fur-free city in the U.S. by banning the sale of fur in local stores. In fact, over 200 people showed up on Saturday to Matthew Shephard Triangle Park on Santa Monica Boulevard & Crescent Heights protesting the sale of fur, showing their support, and giving innocent animals a voice that they would otherwise not have.
And WeHo has a history of being animal friendly-by banning the sale of live animals in pet stores and passing an anti-declaw bill. Candidate John D’Amico, in his bid for West Hollywood City Council, endorses the anti-fur platform and promises that he will follow through with passing legislation to promote this issue while in office. He stated at the rally on Saturday, “West Hollywood has the opportunity to once again be a leader for animal welfare by becoming the first fur-free city in the nation. We have pledged to be a place that is free of cruelty to animals and we can no longer support the barbaric fur trade by selling the products of that cruelty in our city.”
Several notable attendees were present at the protest, including actor Bill McNamara, New York Times Best Selling Author Rory Friedman, Lords of Acid vocalist Lacey Connor, and film producer Shannon Keith who acknowledged, “We have an election coming up on March 8th and it’s a great time to vote for the candidate that has a platform against fur. Once we get those candidates in place in city council, we will be able to move forward with this.”
