RED CARPET ROXY’S “RED ALERT” OF THE WEEK-JULY 19, 2010

A foster pup on the bliss website

Foster an animal today! With the animal shelters overflowing with dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals, now is a great time to foster an animal and save it form euthanasia. Just this last week, I opened up my house to a Chihuahua mix. Just 4 days ago, he was to be euthanized at a local LA shelter, and yesterday he accompanied me to a Beverly Hills pool party where he soaked up the sun, fun, and got loads of attention. My how things change!

This time of year-right around July 4th-is the worst time of year for overcrowding in animal shelters. A well-seasoned rescuer informed me that the fireworks scare some animals and they go running out of their house and they become lost. They get picked up and put in shelters. Also, many of the owners take days to come look for their pets, if at all, so many of these former house pets are put to sleep. Others are strays and some are owner surrenders-many due to foreclosures. Just last week, I worked to place a 12 year old pure bred Dobie into a forever home after his owners turned him into a high-kill shelter for being “too old” with the instructions to “put him down.” Thank goodness they didn’t, because the sprightly, fun loving senior is on his way to a loving home on the East Coast.

For all of these amazing rescue stories, there are so many more that never make it out of the shelter. With 14,000 animals put to death everyday, the numbers are staggering. So please consider fostering or adopting an animal today.

Here are some great animal rescue organizations to learn more about fostering:

OC Pound Hounds Rescue

Animal Rescue Network of Southern California

You can also Google animal rescue groups in your area. Also, Facebook and Twitter are great ways to cross-post animals and to find one that may be up for adoption/foster.
