The African lion is quickly headed for extinction, losing almost 50% of its population over the last 30 years. Some estimates have been as low as only 23,000 African lions left in the wild! Many factors contribute to this rapid demise, including trophy hunting and commercial trade. In fact, the trophy imports are on the rise in the United States.
By listing this majestic animal in the Endangered Species Act (ESA), they would be protected from trophy imports unless they were for conservation purposes and awareness would be raised and brought to the attention of the world. Click here to go to the Humane Society of the United States website to sign a petition which would be presented to the Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, asking him to list this dwindling species in the ESA.
