The USDA just cited SeaWorld for imprisoning orcas in hazardous conditions which are dangerous to the animals’ health and well-being, thereby violating the Animal Welfare Act. And now a California Congressman has introduced a law, the Orca Welfare and Safety Act, which would make it a crime to hold orcas in captivity.
Of course, this would change everything about SeaWorld’s business, which has been getting an onslaught on negative press about people who have died because of whale-related injuries in the park and the way these orcas are treated, causing them to act out. In fact, several park workers and trainers have come forward stating that living in captivity it isn’t good for the animals and that it should be stopped. You can sign a petition to the State of California here urging lawmakers to put an end to SeaWorld’s inhumane practices. What do you think about this issue?
