Have you ever wondered what happens to military service members’ pets when they are deployed on long tours of duty? If they are lucky, a friend or family member might step up and offer to take care of the pet until he or she returns. But often times, there isn’t anyone who will take in the animal, so that person is forced to sell their beloved pet or give them up to a shelter.
This is where Dogs on Deployment can be helpful. The non-profit helps to place deployed military service members’ pets into safe, loving foster homes until that person returns from their tour of duty. The organization was founded in 2011 by husband and wife Shawn and Alisa Johnson, both active military members who faced the same problem when they were both deployed and needed to place their dog, JD, while they were away. They now foster other dogs in need, as well as take care of their own dogs. Click here to learn more about this unique organization and how you can help.
