This past weekend, I attended the NKLA Super Adoption event at the La Brea Tar Pits in LA. This amazing organization brought together over fifty NKLA-coalition partners, rescue groups and city and county shelters to showcase their animals for adoption. And I am happy to report that almost 500 lives were saved! And that includes dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and even rabbits! All of the city and county animal shelter trucks went back empty because their pets were either adopted out or taken in by other rescue groups.
And I had the privilege of meeting many of these wonderful animals at the adoption fair. I also brought my daughter along to teach her about the importance of animal rescue and pet adoption, as being a compassionate and responsible person is a life lesson that I want to instill in her. And that starts with loving and taking care of her rescue dogs at home, and helping animals in need.
I was chatting with a county shelter volunteer who shared with me, on average, 50 pit bulls PER DAY are dropped off as strays or owner surrenders at his shelter. And that is just pitties, not other dog breeds, nor felines. Many of these animals have been subjected to a life of dogfighting. And the sad reality is, most of them are euthanized on the spot and not even shown to the public because it is so hard to find them homes due to people’s misconceptions about the breed. This is why education about the breed and against dogfighting and spaying and neutering are so important to help pit bulls in particular.
Hopefully, one day, there will be no need for animal shelters and rescue groups because every pet will be in a safe and loving home. Until then, please adopt and don’t shop. There are too many healthy and adoptable animals in overcrowded shelters who are killed simply because there is no room for them. Together, we can make all cities across the country no-kill cities and we can save them all. Click here for more info on NKLA and how you can help animals.
