Javier Bardem, Lin-Manuel Miranda Talk HCA Awards

It’s so exciting to be back on the red carpet and in-person for awards season 2022! And it was great to catch up with nominees such as Javier Bardem, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Marlee Matlin and more at the 5th Hollywood Critics Association Film Awards this week.

Javier Bardem

We all know the magic of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s work, but did you know that even he was surprised by his hero, tick, tick….BOOM! writer, the late Jonathan Larsen’s creative process. “I learned everything about him.” He continued, “he wrote himself questions, like hard questions, and then would write himself songs as the answer to the questions.” Queue 525,600 minutes from Rent.

Being the Ricardos star Javier Bardem, who was celebrating his birthday along with his Oscar nomination that evening, revealed who he thought should win the Academy Award in his house (wife Penelope Cruz is also nominated this year for her work in Parallel Mothers.) Watch this video below to see what he says!

And the stars of Coda, including Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur, were still on a high from winning the Outstanding cast in a motion picture award at the SAG awards the night before. Troy joked that he needed “heavier shoes” to remain grounded after all of the fanfare. Coda scooped up Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and the Spotlight Award  at the HCA’s, as well as a Best Supporting Actor award for Kotsur.

Once inside, guests enjoyed Heineken beverages and listened to speeches by award winners such as Kristen Stewart, Andrew Garfield, and honoree Nicolas Cage who received the Acting Achievement Award. While he thanked the HCA and his peers, he seemed to be quite impressed by up-and-comer Jude Hill, the star of Belfast. “You are a star, young man!” Cage stated. “I want to know who your tailor is and what is on your menu, and I want to know what you are reading. You are fantastic!,” as Hill’s Belfast co-stars Caitriona Balfe and Jamie Dornan beamed with pride.
