What makes a hero dog? Saving people from a burning building, working as a therapy dog or detecting a bomb before it goes off? No doubt, all of these would constitute a hero dog, but really, aren’t all pups heroic in some way? I think so.
And recently, I caught up with Derek Hough, Bindi Irwin, Alison Sweeney, Lacey Chabert and other animal-loving celebrities at American Humane Association’s Hero Dog Awards. This special awards show salutes often ordinary dogs doing extraordinary things.
In addition, I got to meet and in some cases “interview” these amazing nominees, including the winner of the 2015 American Hero Dog, Harley, who is a puppy mill survivor. Despite the fact that he spent TEN years living in a cage and suffered horrible abuse (his cage was power-washed with him in it, resulting in the loss of his eye), he was still in great spirits and travels the country educating people on the evils of the commercial dog breeding industry. And you can see all of these amazing dogs and their stories this Friday night, October 30 at 8/7c on the Hallmark Channel. Be sure to tune in!
