The annual Clear the Shelters Day returns on July 23rd. Animal shelters across the country are joining NBC owned channels to find loving and forever homes for pets in need. More than 400 shelters across 20 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico will waive adoption fees on July 23rd in order to clear the shelters and save lives.
This is the third year in a row this amazing event will happen. And it was such a huge success last year with over 19,000 pets finding homes last year. But just to put it in perspective, approximately 7.6 million animals go into shelters each year and only 2.7 million are adopted. Most healthy, adoptable pets who enter the shelters never make it out, and are euthanized due to shelter overcrowding and lack of interest.
