The annual Canadian seal hunt began this past Monday, much to the disapproval of many, including Morrissey. The vegan and animal-loving singer hasn’t performed in Canada since 2004, largely because of the barbaric hunt in which baby harp seals are clubbed to death or shot for their fur and meat. On average, over 325,000 seals are slaughtered annually in this way. And one of the largest importers of seal meat, China, has been under pressure from several animal-rights groups to stop supporting the hunt, even stalling a trade agreement between Canada and China.
In Morrissey’s message posted on True to You, he denounces the hunt and praises China. “The seal hunt in Canada is struggling to make a start this year due to almost no markets, and China especially is refusing to sell Canadian seal meat. Thank you, China!”He went on to say, “Internationally, Canada’s sorry image is due entirely to its seal slaughter — which is greedy and barbaric, and it is dismaying to witness such ignorance in 2014. Sound reason tells us that only those of the thinnest intellect wear animal fur, and because the Canadian government are concerned with animals only economically, killing baby seals with lightning brutality is now Canada’s primary global image. Until this massacre is abolished, Canada itself is regrettably fashionably dead.”
One way to protest this cruel activity is to boycott Canadian seafood, which directly impacts their seafood industry. Also, here are ways to search restaurants and grocery stores that support the boycott. Click here to learn more about this cause and how you can help.
