From the moment I walked in to the Altman Building to see last night’s Betsey Johnson show, I could feel the palpable energy. As we all know, Betsey is a firecracker, never adhering to any set pattern or any traditions, except to be unique and nontraditional. And her Fall 2010 show exemplified that. Beginning with a bleached blond Kelly Osbourne who opened the show, in what I like to call, cowgirl crazy-gun, holster, and red leggings. Kelly’s face was shrouded in a bandanna that shielded her identity until she got to the end of the runway for her big reveal. People in the audience went bananas and cheered when they learned who the incognito cowgirl was. What other western features were big for Betsey? Corsets, lace ruffles on the hip of dresses, bustles, and black leather fringe on jackets. Another hot blond reared her face on the runway-Marilyn Monroe. Her Warhol pop art print face popped up on dresses and tops. And let’s not forget that yesterday was Valentine’s Day–Johnson closed her show with her processional of models at the end of the show batting big, red, plastic heart shaped balloons into the audience, which included Rebecca Weinberg, Melissa Joan Hart, and Robert Verdi. “Long Live McQueen” is what one sign read that the last models wielded at the end of the show. Very nice touch-we all loved that. What Betsey Johnson show would be complete without her signature cartwheel at the end of the runway. How does she do it year after year? Oh yeah, she’s Betsy!
