Just this past week, the Los Angeles City Council voted 12-2 in favor of a law that would ban the sale of commercially bred animals in pet stores. Instead, pet stores must sell rescued pets from animal shelters, registered rescue groups, and Humane Societies. This action was championed by City Councilman Paul Koretz in an effort to cut down on the number of animals euthanized every year in LA-area shelters. Individuals would still be able to purchase pets from breeders directly, just not through pet stores. West Hollywood, Hermosa Beach, and Irvine have already put into place similar laws. And if a pet store is caught selling commercially bred animals under the law, the first-time offense will cost them $250. Because the vote wasn’t unanimous last week, it is being voted on again this week.
And I think this law is absolutely brilliant! Tens of thousands of animals are killed each year in LA County shelters. I would love to see empty cages at shelters because animals have been placed in safe, loving homes rather than being killed due to overcrowding. In my opinion, it is irresponsible and selfish to commercially breed these pets, when so may others are dying unnecessarily at shelters. And pure breeds as well, not just mutts! What do you think about this law?
