As of September 1st, the annual dolphin hunt in Japan resumed, as shown in the Oscar winning documentary, The Cove. Thousands of dolphins will be herded into a shallow bay and nets by fisherman who will capture a few to be sold to aquariums and water parks all over the world.
Most will meet a more tragic end-they will be stabbed repeatedly with knives and lances until they bleed to death. Their meat will then be sold for human consumption, which is dangerous because of extremely high levels of PCBs, heavy metals, and other toxins.
A new Prime Minister-Naoto Kan-was just elected in Japan and his background is in environmental campaigning and activism, so hopefully he will be motivated to end this cruel and unhealthy hunt.
