Just last week, the Office of the Inspector General released papers which explained in detailed the failure of the USDA to uphold the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) in the protection of dogs at puppy mills. The auditors recorded over 28,000 violations at 81 puppy mills over a 2 year period. Here are some of the disturbing things that they found:
-Despite these inspections, breeders were allowed to operate and keep dogs in “inhumane conditions”-dogs living in feces and urine infested cages
-Dogs were fed food filled with dead cockroaches
-Dogs were infested with ticks
-Dogs had sustained injuries that were not attended to i.e. mutilated legs and other severe injuries
-And in one of the worst cases of neglect at a puppy mill in Oklahoma, 5 dogs were found dead & the others had resorted to cannibalism due to starvation. As a result, 22 more dogs perished because nobody did anything about this.
This is tragic and so unnecessary. Please stop buying from places that purchase puppies from puppy mills and adopt instead.
