We are in the throws of flu season. Fevers, aches, chills, runny noses, coughs-you name it-these symptoms are at their peak right now. But there are some ways that you can combat these ailments now, by boosting your immune system. And here are five tips for making sure your immune system is in tip-top fighting shape!
Get Your Sleep
Medical professionals recommend getting seven to eight hours of sleep for good reason. While sleeping, your body has a chance to repair and reset itself from the damage done that day. If you take time away from this critical function, you are putting yourself at risk for illness.
Drink an Immunity-Boosting Cocktail
And I don’t mean a vodka soda or a margarita! Instead, first thing in the morning, reach for a mixture of warm water, lemon juice, ginger, honey and turmeric. The juice of a lemon provides natural vitamin C, while honey and ginger are both antioxidants and can have antiviral properties. And turmeric has curcumin, which can help the immune system.
Workout, Workout, Workout
We have all heard the benefits that working out has on your heart, but what about your lungs? Turns out, it may flush sickness-causing bacteria from your lungs. It also causes white blood cells (the fighter cells) to move around your system more rapidly, thereby patrolling your body better.
Become a Tea-Totaler
The afternoon slump hits around 3 or 4 pm almost everyday. But instead to grabbing that cup of joe, opt for your favorite green tea. Tea has a natural chemical called alkylamines, which has been shown to strengthen the immune system. Green tea is also rich in antioxidants and may have cancer-fighting properties. Big bonus.
Laugh Like No One is Watching
One of the quickest and easiest ways to give your immune system a pickup is to laugh. And the more the better. It not only lowers stress, but it also helps sleep happen. And wouldn’t you rather smile than frown? I know I would. What is your favorite way to keep healthy? Comment below!
