Wyclef Jean has confirmed his plans, via a phone interview with the NY Times last night, to run for President of Haiti, the country of his birth.

Although Wyclef left the impoverished country at the age of 9 for Brooklyn, he always kept his roots close to his heart and had his eyes drastically opened, along with most of us, after the devastating earthquake that rocked Haiti earlier this year.

Jean stated in the interview, “You can either live trying to do something or die having done nothing…(I don’t want to be remembered as) somebody who, after the devastation of the country that he claimed he loved so much, just kept singing more songs.” He continued,“I’m not running for president so much as I’m being drafted. The youth, in their mind if I don’t come and put a perspective to things, they feel there’s no future for the country, and I have to agree with them.”

As you might remember, Wyclef’s Yele Haiti Foundation, which raised $9.1 million for earthquake relief, was questioned about “accounting and bookkeeping practices” to which the singer declared that these things had been fixed.

Even though “Clef” has no previous political experience, he claims, “All I know is I’m a natural leader, and I will surround myself” with top-notch policy experts.

Do you think Wyclef Jean would make a good President for Haiti? He can play the guitar with his tongue!
