Majorca, Spain, home to Mick Jagger, Michael Douglas, and Sir Richard Branson, was such a blast and so easy to get to by taking Vuehling Airlines from the Barcelona Airport. The flight is only about one hour, and well worth the trip. I rented a car which was key, as the island is quite large, but easy to get around. While there, I stayed at the Nixe Palace Hotel which was located in Illetas right on the beach. Illetas tends to be a little bit slower than Palma (where many of the clubs, lounges, and harbor is located), but nice if you want to get away from all of the commotion.
I had great Italian food at Italian Square Ristorante in Portals Nous, another more calm neighborhood very close to Illetas. The king prawns there were literally the size of lobster tails! Our uber-friendly waiter, Sandro, insisted we taste the homemade Grappa after our meal, which definitely got us ready for the rest of the night. Also, I had delicious seafood paella at the Nixe Palace Hotel restaurant-in fact, probably the best paella I have ever eaten. The paella is served with sliced & seasoned green bell peppers on the side-so good! And don’t miss Bon Sol restaurant in the Ciudad Jardin section in Paseo Maritimo, a locals only restaurant off of the beaten path where you go to the counter and choose the freshest fish of the day as your entree.
Fun bars in Palma include: Mojitos (small lounge with a great DJ spinning a combo of American Top 40 & Spanish dance tunes-and yummy Mojitos!) and the upscale El Divino, one of the hottest clubs spinning dance, Top 40 remixes, and techno music. The club is centered in the middle of Palma, overlooking the bay and is decorated in all white for the trendy crowd, as well as has an oxygen bar for those who need a good puff! The place starts rocking after midnight, so hit dinner & a lounge before you go.
For sight seeing, I headed to the Cathedral, also in Palma, for some fantastic architecture & history.
Then, onto Barcelona where Gaudi reigns supreme. You can see many of his designs all over the city, with the most famous being La Sagrada Familia. There are other structures also designed in this vain-from an apartment building to a city park. It is best to walk around and take in all of these magnificent and unique places.
Not sure if you are aware, but Barcelona boasts some of the best South Asian food that I have ever had. Just remember-most people go to dinner around 10 or 10:30 PM, as restaurants usually open around 8 and it is part of the culture to eat later at night. Favorite Indian food in Barca-Bembi hands down! Delicious pakoras, roti, naan, and curries, and for Thai cuisine, head to Thai Cafe and order any of the green or red curry dishes-they are excellent. Don’t forget the sticky rice! For traditional Spanish fare, Ciudad Comital is a solid bet as they have lots of great tapas, cheeses, and bread in which to indulge.
For a more vibrant, party like atmosphere, you can go to CDLC for fantastic food from various cultures like the Middle & Far East and Spanish, and then dance it off all night long. Recommendation-order bottle service if you can as it is super crowded and hard to get to the bar. Disfrutar (Enjoy)!
