This past Friday, my fellow blogging buddy, Megs Makeup, and I ventured to the beautiful Los Feliz estate-“The Cedars”-of fashion designer Sue Wong to preview her Fall 2011 collection inspired by Cecil Beaton’s costume designs from My Fair Lady. Think lots of tulle and silk, handcrafted headwear that recalls old Hollywood glamour, as well as ornate beadwork and extreme attention to detail-a trademark of Sue’s work.
We also got to enjoy her exquisite 1920’s-era abode. In fact, there is a Moroccan-themed room named for Jimi Hendrix, who actually stayed there! Other well known houseguests-Johnny Depp during the filming of Ed Wood, Howard Hughes, and silver screen legend, Norma Talmadge. The MGM lion head is prevalent all over the property, including on the crown moldings in the ceiling. Truly a historic Hollywood home.
And her clothing and accessory designs were just as beautiful. In fact, Wong describes herself as the “ultimate maximalist” who is a “lover of details.” And it shows. The thought that goes in to her handiwork could only belong to a person with such an eye. After speaking with Sue, it is clear to me how important beauty, magic, and transformation are to this passionate designer.
