Designer Sue Wong kicked off LA Fashion Week with a tribute to the Hollywood Starlets of yesterday by presenting her Spring 2011 Collection called Glamour Goddesses on Friday night. A bevy of models worked the party rooms at Atelier Sue Wong dressed as Pre-Code (translation-the free wheeling, adventurous time at the dawn of Hollywood before the Hayes Code of Censorship was enacted) silver screen legends like Jean Harlow, Tallulah Bankhead, Mae West, Barbara Stanwyck, Marlene Dietrich, and Joan Crawford.
Think lots of embroidery and embellishments like feather, pearls, bead work, and crochet. Silhouettes included column dresses, petal skirts, sheaths, halter gowns, strapless necklines, and empire waists.
Said Wong, “I wanted to evoke the chic elegance and cool mystique of Greta Garbo, the irreverent and indomitable spirit of Mae West, and the seductive sensuality of Jean Harlow.” I say, “Bring back the glamour!” The dresses were absolutely stunning and really comparable to couture as each design is hand made and takes 45 days to create.
Celebrity guests like Glee’s Charlotte Ross, Bridget Marquardt from The Girls Next Door, Carolyn Hennesy-one of the stars of Cougar Town, Kaycee Stroh from High School Musical, and Bruce Willis’ ex Brooke Burns roamed the space alternately viewing the clothing while taking in Wong’s extensive Modern Art collection. The designer circled the room making sure guests’ drinks were filled with her own Sue Wong branded wine while listening to admirers (many decked in period pieces from the time in which the fashions were inspired) congratulate her on a job well done.
