No doubt you have heard the word Darfur buzzing around. But do you know what is really going on in that western region of Sudan? A horrible genocide and atrocities almost too disturbing and graphic to explain. Innocent men, women, and even children are being brutalized, attacked, raped, and killed by a nefarious, militant regime attempting to control a country that it led into anarchy. In fact, this corrupt government has even expelled international peace keepers from their country, refused to let new ones in, and objects to prosecuting those individual responsible for committing these heinous and violent acts against their own citizens. Basically it is a place where human rights do not exist.
And Hollywood has taken notice. Serial philanthropist, David Arquette who is already involved in several charities in this country decided to raise awareness for the cause of Darfur by designing T-Shirts to be sold at his store, Propr, in Venice with all of the proceeds ($30) going to advocacy organization, Save Darfur. At the launch of his initiative last night at Propr, Arquette reiterated the importance of this issue by saying, “You have to give people a voice when they don’t have one. There is a lot of legislation coming up within our government where the President, House of Representatives, and Congress can really hold the regime, responsible for these actions, accountable.” And where does his sense of philanthropy and do gooding come from? His parents, of course. He acknowledged, “My mother marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. in Chicago. Teach by example.” Which is exactly what he is passing on to his daughter, CoCo, with Courtney Cox, who looked radiant on the Red Carpet last night after her Golden Globe nomination just 2 days earlier. “I feel great!” she proclaimed to me and even said that David made her “a nice salad” the day the nominations were announced. Ever the supportive couple, Courtney made a point to say that the whole family would be wearing the Save Darfur T-Shirts. Maybe they will wear them to the Alabama vs. Texas Championship game in January? After all, Cox is a Bama native and David did mention they would be in attendance at the game. As David exclaimed “Roll tide!” And Christmas came early for Courtney, not only because of her first Golden Globe nod, but also because of Hidden Valley Ranch. That’s right, HVR-her condiment of choice. As her co-star on Cougar Town, Busy Phillips explained to me last night that while others were showering flowers and expense gifts on Courtney, Busy chose to reward her boss’ (Cox and Arquette are both producers on Cougar Town) accomplishments with “2 tubs of Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing from Costco.” However, CC hasn’t actually consumed it because it sat in Phillips’ car for 2 days. You know what they say about letting food sit out……
Also rubbing shoulders, a svelte looking Tara Reid who was excited for her issue of Playboy, in which she posed, to be on newsstands as of today. And others from the cast of Cougar Town, including Carolyn Hennesey who calls herself “the sexiest cougar I know!” and easy on the eyes Brian Van Holt who so very kindly offered me refreshments once we were inside the bash. SAG Awards nominee Patricia Arquette came with barefoot hubby Thomas Jane the star of Hung, and joked that for Christmas her family “just does regular things and drinks blood!” Self-described “tech nerd” and host of Attack of the Show on G4TV, Alison Haislip marveled at the Save Darfur T-Shirts and added “we need more products that support great causes.” Indeed we do.
