Baseball legend and Yankees owner George Steinbrenner passed away today after suffering a massive heart attack at his Tampa, FL home. He was 80 years old. Known for his incredible thirst for winning, Steinbrenner took to one time second division Yankees to several World Series wins in 1977-78, 1996, 1998-2000 and 2009. He was even immortalized on Seinfeld in 1994 as George Costanza’s (Jason Alexander) “Boss,” also his nickname. The Steinbrenner family has released the following statement:
“He was an incredible and charitable man. First and foremost, he was devoted to his entire family — his beloved wife, Joan; his sisters, Susan Norpell and Judy Kamm, his children, Hank, Jennifer, Jessica and Hal; and all of his grandchildren. He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again.”
Funeral services will be private, but there will be a public memorial for the Boss sometime in the future. An MLB rep was quoted as saying there would be a moment of silence at tonight’s 81st All Star Game in Anaheim in George’s honor, but that plans had not been totally finalized. NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s office made the announcement that the flags at City Hall would be lowered to half-staff. RIP Boss.
