I recently had the opportunity to chat with fashion designer Rachel Roy about her Fashion’s Night Out party, her Fall fashion must haves, and her Spring 2010 trends. She also debuted her new Rachel Roy diffusion line for Macy’s in August, creating an affordable but still stylish contemporary line aimed at young fashionistas who want to capture the downtown cool look without blowing out there bank accounts.
RCR: How was your Fashion’s Night Out event?
Rachel Roy: It was great! I had Estelle the singer host it. I had my friend who is a graffiti artist tagging and teaching foster kids from New York how to tag on T-shirts and trench coats and they were selling them and the proceeds were going back to the kids. There was a vintage ice cream truck giving out ice cream. I did what I could to support Fashion’s Night Out and to support Anna (Wintour, Editor of Vogue and one of the creators of the event.)
RCR: What are your Fall fashion must haves?
Rachel Roy: Red, anything in a shade of red, a cardigan, a boyfriend blazer, a smile, and a genuine heart.
RCR: Is there anything you won’t wear for the Fall?
Rachel Roy: I am not a huge fur girl. I don’t mind vintage for some reason because it is already out there. Also, you know I have to dress for my body type and I think women should do that so I don’t think there are any set rules. It is hard when reporters ask me what’s on trend and what should women do because every woman is so different and I think that if you are confident, that’s the prettiest thing about you and then you just wear and apply it to yourself so it has to really start there.
RCR: It is nice for a woman to have her own sense of style.
Rachel Roy: It is nice to follow trailblazers like Chloe Sevigny or Diane Kruger. There is always Kate Moss. She never does any wrong! They are women that are effortless.
RCR: What are your big trends for Spring 2010?
Rachel Roy: Sexy androgeny. Relaxed, effortless, masculine and strong, but always feminine.
