PORTS1961 SPRING 2010 RTW RUNWAY SHOW: NATURE ON DISPLAY

The Ports1961 runway show yesterday at Bryant Park was visually stunning, with models decked in Asian influenced whimsical designs that were a constant reminder of nature and Earth. The sheer, lightweight fabrics layered on top of one another were a clear juxtaposition to the tucked in buns in the hair and the bright colored eye makeup that came together effortlessly. Designer Tia Cibani’s use of the kimono silhouette and aluminum detailing in the form of belts worked quite well together during the show.

The colors were perfectly muted as well as dramatic in the right places. And this season wasn’t without collaborations, in fact Japanese artist Ritsuko Hirai called upon her traditional roots when painting artwork on the fabrics using ink with objects like twigs. And Manolo Blahnik Award winner Julia Lundsten added a complimentary element with her organic influenced shoe collection. Supporters like Ivanka Trump admired the Tao and Daniela dresses which opened the show and wife of celebrity chef Bobby Flay, actress Stephanie March graciously answered reporters’ questions before the show started. Not surprising that I heard more than once in the crowd enthusiastic declarations that Ports1961 was the “best show of the day!” Cibani’s artistry and passion clearly came through in this collection.
