Last night, I hit up the Pete Yorn concert at the Music Box in Hollywood. There was definitely a healthy size crowd, comprised of young hipsters all the way to baby boomers who looked as if they were old enough to have a couple of kids in college, present to hear Pete and his band rock out to songs like “Paradise Cove” (which he dedicated to his Dad), “Crystal Village” which was performed under the hue of warm crimson lights, the lighthearted “Burrito” which he deemed was about morning sex, and “Strange Condition” in which he dropped his guitar on the floor and busted out in harmonica. He was also accompanied by a very colorful and large band including a hyper tambourine player who would intermittently toss his instrument high into the air and then strike it like he was putting out a fire all the while jumping around and twirling like a maniac, a drummer, 2 guitarists (one of which has some solid solos), 1 bass player, 1 mandolin player, a keyboardist, and of course Yorn who would switch between acoustic & electric guitars and the harmonica. This all made for a good, old fashioned guitar driven rock n roll sound. I wish his vocals had been turned higher though because a couple of times it seemed like you couldn’t hear his voice over the loud chords of the songs.
Some highlights of the evening included a sweet acoustic version of New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle,” a riveting version of Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart,” and my favorite Yorn original “Life On a Chain,” which he clearly enjoyed as well. Look for his newest album, a collaboration with actress Scarlett Johansson called “Break Up” to be released on September 15, 2009.
Here is Pete rocking out to “Life On A Chain.” Enjoy!:
