Sure, Tuesday was just like any other day. Except for the fact that Patek Philippe celebrated its anniversary in The Terrace Room at the always-elegant Sunset Tower Hotel. Since 1839, Patek Philippe has graced the world with 175 years of its master craftsmanship in the field of watchmaking. They’ve enjoyed the liberty that comes with being the last man standing: as all other independent Genevan watchmakers have fallen victims to time and circumstances, Patek Philippe has endured, and continued to challenge the bounds of creativity, function, and design in crafting some of the nicest timepieces that any man or woman could hope to ornament their wrists. Certainly better than the paucity of decoration that my wrist usually enjoys, in the form of a singular hairband. And while an iPhone may provide me with the appropriate time increments to get me through the day in a reasonably punctual and orderly manner, it doesn’t quite make the same stylish statement.
While each guest looked ravishing, and suits were the predominant trend of the night for all the dapper gentlemen in the room, they paled in comparison to the real stars of the show: several glass cases that proudly showcased the limited-edition commemorative anniversary pieces. Among them was the real star of the show (again, sorry suited lads), the Patek Philippe grandmaster Chime with 20 complications. Other pieces that were showcased spoke to inspirations from styles and times past, reaching into the company’s rich heritage to highlight 175 years, and plucking out features like a patented time-zone mechanism, moon-phase display, and chronograph. Whether the crowd was comprised of watch connoisseurs or those who loved a good anniversary party, you can be sure that everyone made a couple laps to get a good look. Even a buffet and cocktail reception couldn’t distract from the showpieces, which emanated their own alluring light. And like moths to a flame, people kept circulating throughout the night.
Here’s to 175 years going strong.
