While over the last decade Congress has continued to address the problem of animal fighting, there has been one group of people who have been unaffected by these laws. And that is the group of people who attend these cruel activities.

As Congress continues to slash budgets on its many government programs, it is important to remember that wildlife protections need to remain in place in order to protect many endangered species and habitats from extinction. Currently on the table for budget cuts: protections for polar bears and other endangered species, sea turtle habitats, and the already underfunded National Wildlife Refuge System.

On March 16th, maintenance workers found an extremely emaciated (he was 20 lbs. when he should have weighed 60!) and severely neglected pit bull pup in the bottom of the garbage chute of their Newark, NJ. building. His former owner, Kisha Curtis, had stuffed this dog’s weak, but still very much alive, body in a plastic bag and dumped it down the 22nd story garbage chute of her apartment building. Once the bag moved, the workers sprung into action, taking the pup to the Humane Society, who then transferred him to a New Jersey animal hospital, where he survived through the night which was St. Patrick’s Day, therefore, naming him Patrick.
