Watch out Project Runway, you are getting more competition. And this time it comes in the form of Fashion Star, hosted by supermodel Elle Macpherson, with style mentoring by Jessica Simpson.

The way the competition works is that the contestant with the best fashion design AND business skills gets to launch their line with 3 major retailers (and those have not been announced yet.) The buyers from each chain will act as judges on the show. And each week’s winning looks will be made available immediately for purchase online. How’s that for impulse shopping?

So why do I think this primetime NBC show will be a hit? A few reasons. First, Elle Macpherson, for one. She still looks amazing even though she is pushing 50. And J.Simpson, whether you like her or not, has an almost $1 billion dollar fashion empire under her belt. She and sister Ashlee are now getting ready to design a new line for tweens, thereby building her reach even more. She might be blonde and bubbly, but the girl has some serious business acumen. Plus, she has a good personality for TV and genuinely seems comfortable in that medium. Not to mention, the audience can buy the winning looks right away. Sounds like a recipe for success to me.
