H2: Halloween II, directed by horror flick aficionado Rob Zombie, is the scariest, most shocking installment of the Halloween movie series. Villain Michael Myers is more demented and disturbed than ever before, if you can believe that. I attended the LA premiere last night at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood where it looked more like Halloween night than a summer night in late August. One pretty blonde actress type was wearing a little red dress then decided to top off her outfit with a fake plastic knife going through her head like an arrow. Another busty blonde looked more like a 70’s era Vegas cocktail waitress straight from the flick Casino with a big, puffy bouffant and psychedelic dress. Many movie goers came clad in Rob Zombie tour T-shirts (he also has a successful solo music career) and were feverishly snapping away on their camera as soon as the director of the film entered the theater. The after-party drew lots of fans at MOOD where guests enjoyed Halloween themed drinks (i.e. the Halloween Twist which was quite appropriate considering the twisted ending of the horror flick!) courtesy of Stella Artois, Rose’s Cocktail Infusions, and Skyy Vodka. Among those at the party were a towering Tyler Mane who played psycho killer Myers but couldn’t have been more gentle or nicer, funnyman Craig Robinson dialing away on his cell phone, former Monkees drummer/vocalist Micky Dolenz who chatted up Zombie, and red head actress Sara Rue who told me she was excited about 2 things: her engagement and her upcoming series called Eastwick based on the famous witches.
I would say that most people in the theater were either completely terrified, horrified, or disgusted by the movie, which I think was the exact set of reactions Rob was trying to illicit when he directed this slasher flick. All of the components of a shocking thriller come together: a delusional and relentless Michael Myers stalking his prey and terrorizing anyone that stands in his way; the prolonged and graphic versions of extremely painful torture and killing; unfortunate victims and their sheer panic and trembling expressions; and the carefully timed moments of calm before deranged Myers sprung up on his victims definitely made my heart skip a beat a couple of times. Look for an especially frightening hospital scene at the beginning of the movie that will leave you shaking in your seats. If you are a fan of horror movies, Halloween II will not disappoint. Just make sure you know the person sitting next to you when you watch the movie as you may inadvertently reach for their arm a time or 2!
