I hope you had a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend. I had an amazing time these last few days at the La Quinta Resort and Club, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, in La Quinta, CA. Being in the desert this time of year makes you feel like you are in Mexico without even crossing the border! It is really quite warm and dry-just don’t forget your sunblock because the sun is so strong!
The resort is huge and has a very old school, hacienda-style feel (Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, and Katherine Hepburn have all been guests and the casitas have since been tastefully remodeled.) This historic property boasts 23 tennis courts and sits on 5 golf courses, including the PGA West. For a little R&R, head over to the Spa La Quinta and enjoy the Grape Seed Glow in which a body polish of crushed Napa grape seeds is applied, before a refreshing Vichy shower. The treatment is concluded with a massage of lemongrass moisturizer. Love!
During the day, roam around the 45 lush acres which include 41 swimming pools and 53 spas! I opted to hit the Renker pool-one of the resort’s largest-while the sun was out. And at night, I didn’t even leave the property! (Although Las Consuelos for great margaritas & Mexican food is just down the road.) The first night, I headed over to the property’s 5 star dining experience-Morgan’s In The Desert for contemporary American cuisine inspired by the surroundings-the gorgeous Coachella Valley. Don’t miss the lightly fried artichokes, almonds, and olives-so good! And you know how much I love french fries-order the ones dusted with smoked paprika. Post din dins, I headed to the bar area to hear singer, guitarist, and pianist (simultaneously!) Paul Douglas belt out hits from bands/singers like The Eagles, Jackson Browne, and James Taylor. Songs that you want to hear and sing along with after a few glasses of red wine and a martini or 2. And don’t be afraid to take the make shift dance floor.
I spent the next evening washing down my cares with El Rey Margaritas at the Adobe Grill on their beautiful patio, while watching a mariachi band gleefully butcher Latin ditties like “Bamboleo” and “La Bamba.” The space was soon crowded with tipsy guests dancing their troubles away. And the food is really good too. Homemade spicy pico de gallo and prawn fajitas were just the right thing to order. Just make sure you have a tolerance for hot and spicy food. Even a better reason to get that cold margarita! Click here to learn more about the La Quinta Resort and Club.
