Have you seen the photos of Kim Kardashian’s new hair color? She went ombre blonde! How’s that for a big change? Her inspiration came from a Spanish Vogue photo shoot in which the model had the same hair color. And I just sat down for an exclusive beautychat with her celebrity hair colorist, George Papanikolas at Andy Lecompte, who gave me the scoop on how he took her from dark to light and what she thought of it when she saw it. BTW, they were filming Keeping Up With the Kardashians at the time too. So you will be able to see her transformation play out on TV soon!

RCR: What was the process like taking Kim from dark to light?
GP: It’s a really scary one because it is so unpredictable. There are a lot of things that can go wrong, especially when you are starting with very dark hair. You can have a lot of orange or a lot of breakage. So the first thing is to make sure the hair is really healthy. Then you go in and do a heavy highlight. For Kim, it required two rounds of highlights. But the color actually lifted pretty fast. And we got what we wanted right away.
RCR: And what did she think once it was time for the big reveal?
GP: She was obsessed!
RCR: How do you think that Kim looks?
GP: I love it! It’s fun and a totally edgy look and I’m all about change.

RCR: Does it ever make you nervous to do such a dramatic hair color change on a client?
GP: It depends on the history of their hair. If it’s one of my regular clients and I know what we’ve done and their hair can handle it, then I’m comfortable. But if it’s a brand new client and I don’t know what they are doing then I usually err on the side of changing the color in stages.
RCR: And what are your favorite hair trends right now?
GP: I love the beachy, sun-kissed look. It’s my signature.
RCR: Is there anybody else in Hollywood that you would like to take from dark to light?
GP: No, this is already scary enough!
