Last night, I attended the Season 3 premiere & after party of AMC’s Breaking Bad-a show not for those easily alarmed or overly anxious. Between the show’s “protagonist”-Walt White, a meth manufacturing, underpaid, cancer stricken chemistry teacher on the verge of divorce-played by the superb Bryan Cranston and all of his deliciously devious enemies/friends on the show (think multiple mobsters and various seedy drug dealers), I usually feel like I have just been put through an emotional ringer after I watch an episode. Aside from the heavy and often depressing subject matter, the acting is fantastic, particularly Cranston who makes his character’s life as undesirable as possible, Aaron Paul who plays White’s junkie drug dealing side kick Jesse Pinkman, and Anna Gunn who is cast as White’s tortured and disbelieving wife, Skyler, who is dealing with her own mid-life crisis. And the opening episode of Season 3 doesn’t disappoint-explosions, realizations, and rehab-fasten your seat belts!
After the showing at the Arclight, we headed over to the after party at Milk Studios in Hollywood which drew celebs not only from the show, but also famous fans. I chatted with Bryan Cranston about the last time we spoke in the Spring, and he couldn’t have been nicer, making his way around the room. Rex Lee from Entourage enjoyed the party with a male friend, Mad Men star Jon Hamm and girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt arrived at the party arm in arm, and Aaron Paul looked snug in a scarf and jacket. As I was leaving, RJ Mitte who plays Walter White Jr. on the show summoned my friend and me for a photo. And we obliged.
Breaking Bad premieres on AMC on March 21st, 2010 at 10/9C.
