This is what happened to journalist Euna Lee, along with fellow reporter Laura Ling, who were reporting a story about human trafficking in China when they crossed into North Korea and were arrested for “hostile acts.” They were eventually pardoned after 5 months in a North Korean jail by Dictator Kim Jong-Il after former President Bill Clinton traveled to the country to negotiate their release.
Talk about inspiring! Empowered women came together last night in Beverly Hills for the 20th International Women’s Media Foundation Courage in Journalism Awards. The honorees-Claudia Duque, an investigative reporter from Colombia; Tsering Woeser, a Tibetan blogger based in Beijing; Tanzanian freelance reporter Vicky Ntetema, and Lifetime Achievement Award winner and Mexican journalist Alma Guillermoprieto-had all risked their lives for the pursuit of freedom of speech and truth in reporting.
