It seems like common sense to bring pets and animals inside the house when the temperatures go below freezing. But every year I am shocked and saddened to learn that there are still careless people out there who leave their pets outside to freeze to death. And this is a slow, painful death. It’s unimaginable and cruel.
So this winter and particularly now when the temperatures are at subzero levels, here are some very important tips to follow if you come across an animal (pet or stray) that is outside in the cold.
1. Record the time, date, and location of the animal.
2. Take photos.
3. Contact local authorities (both the police and animal control) immediately!
4. Follow up.
Remember, time is of the essence in these situations, so the quicker these incidents are reporter and handled, the better the outcome for the animal.
And if it your pet that is being kept outside, remember, that pet is YOUR responsibility like a child. YOU signed up to take care of that living, breathing being. You must bring that animal inside and provide it with fresh food, water, and a warm bed. And if you are no longer able to care for that pet, please find a safe, loving, warm home for that animal or surrender your pet to a local rescue group or animal rescue organization who will take care of him/her.
