He is wonderfully friendly, his tail always wagging. There is a nice gentle playfulness about him that made it such a joy to spend time with him. He walks well on the leash and appears housetrained. He loves people, loves attention and seems to love kids as well. Everytime we passed kids playing ball his tail would wag faster. I think he would have joined in the ball game if I had let him. A volunteer writes: Since the original bio appeared, EVERYONE, volunteers and shelter staff alike has stepped up to say how much they love this dog. Rarely, does a dog illicit this many comments from so many people. We see a lot of dogs on a daily basis; we each have a favorite of the day or the week. I have never seen so many people so unconditionally swear love for an animal as I have seen for Declan today. He is a special dog who deserves a special person to spend the rest of his life with. If you are the right person, he will change your life. A volunteer writes: Declan arrived at the shelter with his mate and their new litter of puppies after their owner ran into some problems. This is one big bear of a dog at a solid 71 pounds. Declan looked like he could use a good romp in the backyard and out we went. As soon as he spied the ball in the yard he ran over to it, picked it up, and brought it back to me to throw!!! We had a wonderful game of fetch, and he even allowed me to handle the ball while it was in his mouth. He was super playful, his tail wagged and he was simply amazing. I was not prepared for the friendly affectionate dog this fellow turned out to be. We had some hugging and kissing, and when he was done retrieving the ball, he climbed on the bench next to me and continued to chew it. He was so happy to have a human to spend time with, all he wanted to do was lean on me. When it was time to go back inside, I leashed him with no problem and in we went. He carried the ball back inside with him - so sweet ! This big guy needs a yard and lots of exercise, this is not an apartment dog! The neighbors were feeding him and making sure he had fresh water and even bought him a dog house , but the dog wouldn't leave the porch . The neighbors couldn't take it anymore , so they went over and hooked this boy to a leash and brought him to their fenced in back yard , where he has been for 4 days now . This boys old home is at the back side of the fenced in yard that he is now staying in and they said he will sit at the very back corner of the fence looking over at his old home for hours .
