RED CARPET ROXY’S “RED ALERT” OF THE WEEK-JUNE 14, 2010

Japan's Yushin Maru harpooning a whale before shooting it 3 times with a gun photo: the age

The International Whaling Commission is set to meet on June 21st, and Japan, Iceland, and Norway will again try to proclaim the benefits of commercial whaling. Not only is whaling cruel and unnecessary (the whalers usually chase down whales in large vessels to the point of exhaustion and then harpoon them), but whale meat is extremely high in mercury. It is very unhealthy and dangerous to eat.

The ban on commercial whaling went into effect 25 years ago, but the International Whaling Commission is considering lifting the ban and the Obama Administration is behind this action which would be devastating to whales, considering they are already dealing with oil spills, loss of habitat, pollution, climate change, and other factors.

Click here to tell President Obama to strengthen the ban rather than help in lifting it.
