The nominees for the 21st Annual GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards were just announced today and this special group is being recognized for their positive Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered influences and portrayals they have in the media. Among those up for awards include: Precious, Tom Ford’s A Single Man, Brothers & Sisters, Mad Men, Ellen DeGeneres & Portia Di Rossi’s joint appearance on Oprah, Kathy Griffin: My life on the D-List, Lady GaGa, and The New York Times. In addition, Sex and the City 2 star Cynthia Nixon will be honored in New York with the Vito Russo Award for promoting equal rights among the LGBT community and the cast of the Broadway show Hair will get a Special Recognition for pursuing the issue of marriage equality. Says GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios, “Words and images matter. With these awards, we seek to recognize news coverage and entertainment programming that go beyond stock stereotypes with LGBT storylines that more fully reflect the challenges gay and transgender people face and the aspirations we hold for ourselves and our families. The GLAAD Media Awards honor media professionals who are doing an exceptional job at bringing our stories into the living rooms of America – and set a ‘fairness benchmark’ for the news and entertainment industries. The awards also complement and fund GLAAD’s other programmatic work to share the stories of allies, religious leaders, gay and transgender people of color, local couples and families with Americans.”
The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held in New York on March 13, 2010 at the Marriott Marquis and hosted by Alan Cumming; in Los Angeles on April 17 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza; and in San Francisco on June 5 at The Westin St. Francis and hosted by Bruce Vilanch.
