BEAUTYCHAT: TRESEMME CELEB STYLISTS TALK SUMMER HAIR TRENDS

Summer is almost here and with that comes…..summer hair trends! And recently I chatted with TRESemmé Celebrity Stylist John D. and TRESemmé Stylist Jeanie Syfu about their favorite summer hair looks, how you can get them at home using their favorite TS products, the best hair tricks they have learned along the way and so much more!

RCR: What is your favorite summer hair trend?
JD: Spring represents a time of renewal and fresh starts, and I love any opportunity to feel good and look good. That said, my favorite summer trend this year is a good haircut! My favorite look that I love is what I call the “chopped bob”. It’s a great shorter length style (landing somewhere from the tops of the shoulders to the chin) that’s playful, fresh and full of styling options. I recommend cutting the hair with a solid blunt weight line across the bottom and then have your stylist chip into the ends to add some cool, deconstructed texture.

JS: My favorite hair trend for summer is a “statement haircut.” When hair no longer brushes the shoulders, it takes on a stronger shape and hair has more movement. When it’s taken even shorter (like celebs Charlize Theron and Michelle Williams) it exudes confidence, which is such a strong and beautiful statement for a woman to make.

RCR: How can women achieve effortless but stylish hair? What does that look like?
JD: When it comes to effortless stylish hair, I say simplicity is key. It’s the ease of a look that says “cool and chic,” so try embracing the hair’s natural texture. Also, pulling hair up into a messy top knot or creating an easy going side braid are perfect examples of an laid-back yet refined look.

JS: Knowing what your hair can handle is important in having effortlessly stylish hair. Many trends come and go, but knowing what works on you is important. I wouldn’t suggest a blunt bob with bangs on someone who has naturally curly, thick hair because it would take a lot of maintenance to straighten. Instead, for that woman, I would go for a longer length with some layering. I even had to learn for myself – I spent two years growing my hair out in pursuit of long, effortless looking beachy waves. Instead, my hair’s fine texture looked limp and required a lot of work in the morning. I went back to my short pixie cut, and not only is it less work for me, it feels and looks so much better.

RCR: What should every woman have in her hair care repertoire and why?
JD: I always say that a great head of hair always starts with a great shampoo and conditioner which really sets the “foundation” of a great style. I recommend TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner, because they help smooth your strands for easier styling.

JS: I think every woman should have a good brush and a fortifying shampoo and conditioner. I love the detangling brushes by YS Park and a classic Mason Pearson boar/nylon bristle brush. It not only feels good on the scalp, but it breaks up natural oils and products in the hair before washing, stimulates the scalp to promote growth, and also works great for styling.  TRESemme’s Platinum Strength Strengthening Shampoo and Conditioner effectively strengthens and cleans your hair, and, when used regularly, repairs up to two years of damage!

RCR: What is your can’t live without hair product?
JD: The product I any live without… TRESemmé Fresh Start Dry Shampoo! This product is perfect for refreshing and reviving a tired style, and leaves hair full of volume and texture. Perfect for anyone on the go!

JS: It’s tough to choose just one, but I would have to say the TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Foaming Mousse! It’s lightweight and builds amazing, long-lasting fullness and texture to all types of hair. I start pretty much every hairstyle with it when I’m shooting.

RCR: How often should women shampoo their hair?
JD: I say a woman should wash her hair every couple of days. But- that being said…. You know your own hair best!  Sometimes over-shampooing can strip the hairs natural oils, but not shampooing enough can do just the opposite and leave hair too oily. The only way you’ll really find out is if you try, so try going a few days in between washes, and see how it reacts.

JS: Women can gage how often to wash by their hair texture. Fine to medium hair can be washed every 1-2 days and thicker, more course hair can go 2-4 days. TRESemmé Fresh Start Color Dry Shampoo is a must-have product that fully revives your look between washes. The Fresh Start line removes oil and eliminates odor, and this new formula also has a UVA complex that provides a UV filter that is perfect for protecting your color while you’re out in the sun. “Second day” hair is the best hair for ponytails, twists and top knots, so skipping a day of washing can encourage you to play up some fun styles and also keep hair healthy!

RCR: As it warms up outside, what is your favorite go-to hairstyle and why?
JD: I love the effortlessness and range of options that braids offer! Whether you’re coming from the beach or going to work, braids are a great way to control hair and give it some style.

Braids! I love that there are so many different types, and that they keep hair off the face. Grown out bangs in 90-degree heat – need I say more? Braids also might be one of the only styles that actually get better throughout the day as they get a bit disheveled – not to mention that you can undo the braid for some really cool texture

RCR: What is the best hair tip or trick you have learned in your career?
JD: One of the best tips I can offer is that less really is more, especially when it comes to product! Its always best to start with a little product and work more in as you see fit for your hair. You can always add more, it’s not as easy to take it away.

JS: The best hair trick that I’ve learned in my career is (if you have mid to long hair) to invest in a good set of clip-in extensions. They are really easy to use, just make sure you get human hair (you can have your colorist blend them to your hair color) and not synthetic so they blend better, and keep the length close to your own.  When I’m shooting, leading a show at fashion week, or working on a celebrity I always use them because they give your hair that extra pop of glamour that isn’t obvious. Those are the best beauty tricks – when you can’t quite figure out what someone has done differently, but they look incredible.

RCR: Who has the best hair in Hollywood?
JS: There is a lot of great hair in Hollywood, but if I had to choose I’d have to say Jessica Biel. Her color is fantastic and it always looks so shiny and never over styled. Another would be Charlize Theron because she looks so gorgeous with her hair short! I gagged (in a good way) when she walked the red carpet at the Oscars – definitely one of my favorite looks.
