James Cameron’s Avatar has officially crossed the $1 billion worldwide box office marker, and is now the fourth highest grossing movie of all time. Number 3 is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and number 2 is Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. And what film still holds the top spot? That would be Titanic, Cameron’s first $1 billion box office blockbuster and highest grossing film of all time. So will Avatar overtake Titanic as the number 1 highest grossing film of all time? Only time will tell, but it is certainly seems like it is within reach as both were released on the same weekend in December (Titanic was released in 1997) and by the end of the New Year’s Day weekend in 1998, Titanic had earned $152.5 million in the domestic box office, while Avatar has already raked in $352.1 million domestically. The race is on to see if audiences will help JC break his own record!
