Last night I had the opportunity to taste the Mediterranean treats at a new restaurant in Los Feliz called Desert Rose. Skeptical as I went in because I love, love, love Mediterranean food, so much so that I eat my own homemade hummus & pita almost everyday. Can’t get enough of it! And this restaurant touts itself as California-Mediterranean fusion complete with family recipes presumably from the “old country.” So I sat down and was soon impressed with what came to our table. First of all, my favorites were the warm pita chips with hummus (surprise, surprise!) which was paired with super fresh tabbouleh salad and babaganoush which all tasted authentic and homemade, and the other star was the generous sized baked goat cheese disk on top of greens with a fruity vinaigrette. Yum! Other friends at my table raved about the chicken & steak kabobs which were complemented by a vegetable pizza, a garlic spread, and single grilled pearl onion and the desserts-chocolate covered pistachio mousse and a decadent warm chocolate lava cake which I could smell (so good!) from across the table. They even have a whole vegan menu which I really like. Other perks were that the restaurant has a good sized patio for warm weather dining (or cold depending on your tolerance) and a musician who played guitar selections while we enjoyed our meal. Just so you know, Desert Rose has a very relaxed, open feel to it, so if you are looking for stuffy and snobby, this isn’t the place for you. Think more of a spot where Brad & Angelina would duck into to avoid the paps and still get a delicious bite. And already a winner of the Diners’ Choice Award on Opentable.com, it is a Desert Rose indeed!
