Grab the tissues, this one is a tear-jerker. Sully, President George H. W. Bush’s service dog, demonstrated the ultimate sign of loyalty a canine could show his pet parent. As the former president’s casket was on display at a Houston funeral home, Sully laid in front of it, somber, and seemingly still watching over his late master.

Sully also accompanied the Bush family, as well as H. W.’s remains, on a flight to Washington D.C. today where Bush, Sr. will lie in state at The Capitol. From there, a funeral for Bush will be held at the National Cathedral on Wednesday. After that, #41 will be returned to Houston for interment on Thursday.

But this will not be the end of the line for Sully. He will rejoin the workforce via America’s VetDogs at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where he will assist with “physical and occupational therapy to wounded soldiers and active duty personnel during their journey to recovery.”

“As much as our family is going to miss this dog, we’re comforted to know he’ll bring the same joy to his new home, Walter Reed, that he brought to 41,” former President George W. Bush wrote. And no doubt, he is one special pooch who knows a two-page list of commands and can answer the phone and fetch requested items.

RIP #41 and have a wonderful life, Sully.
