“Whatever happened to pretty?”
That was the question that Kevan Hall posed to me after debuting his Spring 2013 collection of evening wear and White Label bridal dresses last night at his atelier in Los Angeles. The event was sponsored by the American Gem Trade Association and designers Erica Courtney, Mark Schneider Designs, Baggins, Somewhere in the Rainbow and Yael Designs. Effectively kicking off the fashion hunt for awards season, the affair was quite intimate, and commenced with a string trio playing classical music as models floated down the runway in Hall’s delicious confections. His stunning collection incorporated bold colors, classic silhouettes, and feminine touches.
My favorite piece was an off the shoulder canary yellow floor-length gown with which was absolutely stunning! Hall maintained,”That piece was all about glamor and femininity. We showed a new way that we could do a bustle with that bow in the back.” Another standout look was a ruffled hot pink and charcoal gray number, Kevan’s favorite of his collection, which had the audience literally gasp in elation at the bright color and beautiful tailoring of the dress. Upon hearing the the reaction of the crowd while styling his models backstage, Hall didn’t know what to make of it, “I thought, did something bad happen?” Quite the opposite!
And the bridal group didn’t disappoint either. Kevan’s painstaking construction and extreme attention to detail reflected in these dresses, which ranged from a more traditional oyster drop torso tulle bustier dress with a full waterfall cascade skirt to a chic alabaster guipere lace gown with cut-out back.
This stylish soiree was attended by several of the designer’s celebrity friends, including Teri Hatcher who brought daughter Emerson, blonde bombshell Virginia Madsen, actress Alfre Woodard, Hunger Games star Amandla Stenberg, The Big Bang Theory’s Mayim Bialik and Annika Marks from the critically-acclaimed The Sessions. And all of these style-savvy women had nothing but love for Kevan and his designs. Exclaimed Madsen about wearing Kevan Hall, “I feel so completely beautiful! You feel like a true movie star in his clothes!” Marks described the looks by saying,”They are feminine, classy and elegant.” Even the pint-sized Stenberg praised Hall’s work,”I love Kevan Hall! His clothes are gorgeous and fun at the same time!”
“At the end of the day, I think women just want to feel pretty,” Kevan acknowledged at the end of our chat. And he is so right. It is all about feeling pretty, isn’t it?
