The late fashion designer Alexander McQueen was posthumously honored at last night’s 28th Annual CFDA Awards held at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. Sarah Jessica Parker presented the award and spoke the following moving words about her fallen friend:
“I was an admirer and he was aware of my affection. He was a singular mind. How do you do him justice in a few words? There’s no question his breathtaking work will endure. But I would’ve loved to see what he would’ve done next.”
After Parker’s speech, models wearing McQueen’s final collection headed down the runway while the soundtrack to The Piano filled the air, an ode to his Fall 2006 Collection.
Also honored at the event was supermodel Iman who received the Fashion Icon Award. After accepting the award, she jokingly reminisced, “I want to thank my parents for giving me the longest neck of any girl on any go-see anywhere in the world.” And she even made a lovingly jab towards her hubby, rocker David Bowie, when she proclaimed that the CFDA had given her “the right to finally say to my husband, ‘Move over, you’re not the only icon in the house.” Right on, Iman!
Also in attendance were Marc Jacobs who won Womenswear Designer of the Year, Richard Chai, Alexander Wang, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jason Wu, Rachel Weisz, and Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award honoree Michael Kors.
