VMAS 2014 WRAP-UP REPORT

For anyone who missed the VMAs, or those who just might want to relive it, here’s a recap of how the show went down. Historically known to be a night for outlandish and off-the-wall performances, last night was certainly no different.

katy perry

From the very start, the red carpet was filled with some rather interesting ensembles, beginning with Katy Perry’s throwback tribute to Britney Spears. Remember that gem of a denim dress that Spears’ wore in 2001 to the VMA’s? Perry arrived this year wearing a new and improved Versace rendition of the gown. Last week Spears challenged Perry via Twiter, “@katyperry You’re up next. #Noexcuses. You have 24 hours to do your best impression.” While more than 24 hours had elapsed since the challenge, it’s fair to say Perry pretty much hit this one out of the park.

The theme of this year seemed to be no pants. Even Taylor Swift, who is typically not one to take fashion risks, channeled her inner gymnast with her blue, alphabet print romper that looked more like a competition leotard than anything else. Arianna Grande and Beyoncé also took part in the leotard look during their VMA performances. As for other carpet trends, crop tops were especially popular amongst younger stars including Lucy Hale, Miley Cyrus, Victoria Justice, and Becky G. Taking the crop top a step further, Rita Ora, Kim, Kendall, and Kylie Kardashian, and J.Lo all opted for more revealing gowns. And then there was Amber Rose, who managed to fit into all of these categories. We aren’t exactly sure what she was wearing.

Nicki Minaj

Speaking of revealing, what would the night be without at least one wardrobe malfunction? This year’s award goes to Nicki Minaj who attempted to make a much-too-quick wardrobe change in between the performances of “Anaconda” and “Bang Bang.” Well the show must go on! After not having enough time to zip the dress back stage, Minaj used both hands to secure the dress in place as she continued on with the performance. Other performers of the night included Arianna Grande, Jesse J, Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Usher, 5 Seconds of Summer, Iggy Azalea, Maroon 5, and the one and only Beyoncé, who arguably stole the entire show with her 15 minute album medley.

While Beyoncé did deliver a killer performance, the night goes to Miley Cyrus who opted to use her acceptance speech for Video of the Year as a chance to shed light on homeless youth. After the award was announced in her name, she accompanied a young man named Jesse to the stage, but stopped just short of it. Jesse proceeded to accept the award on her behalf, using the allotted speech time to urge people to contribute to the cause.

Beyonce Knowles

“The music industry will make over $7 billion this year, and outside these doors are 54,000 human beings who have no physical home. If you want to make a powerful change in the world right now, please join us and go to Miley’s Facebook page. A dream you dream alone is only a dream, but a dream we dream together is a reality. Thank you so much for your time,” Jesse told the audience. Cyrus watched in tears.

Miley definitely approached this year’s VMA’s much differently than she did last year, but we couldn’t be more pleased, or touched. What was your favorite part of the night?
