STOP THE KILLING OF DOGS IN MAURITIUS

In one of the most barbaric stories I have ever heard, it is reported that dogs on the small island of Mauritius are being injected and killed with cleaning fluid. Why you ask? The government there feels they are being “bothersome” to the expanding British tourism business and uses cleaning fluid to kill these dogs because it is cheap.

Locals have said they have heard dogs screaming and writhing in pain before they die. Then, the dogs, some of them still alive, are transported to a mass grave where the are buried, breathing or not. And they are stuck in the heart, oftentimes by inexperienced or inept officers, creating even more pain for the animal. And they usually kill the dogs in front of other dogs, which instills a massive fear and terror in these canines’ final minutes. Absolutely horrifying.

Back in 2012, the government outlawed this practice in favor of sterilization of stray dogs. But undercover cameras have caught workers from the Mauritian Society For Animal Welfare, reverting back to their old, cruel, heinous ways. In fact, MSAW workers are compensated for each dog caught and killed.

Alan Knight, head of the East Sussex-based animal welfare group International Animal Rescue (IAR), stated to the Daily Mail: “Anyone with a trace of humanity will find this footage unbearable to watch. It is chilling to observe the callous indifference of the dog killers towards their victims. Mauritius promotes itself as a paradise island for international holidaymakers, but instead it is a veritable hell on earth for dogs. This, exposé shows that nothing has changed since IAR first revealed the extent of the problem 2012, and it will have serious consequences for the country’s tourist industry, for which the blame lies firmly at the door of the government.”

And the Daily Mail reported that Elisa Allen, a director of PETA, said, “Homeless dogs have a hard enough time surviving as it is, without being hunted down and killed in painful ways. The only civilised and effective way to curb the population of stray dogs is to prevent more puppies from being born in the first place by implementing a comprehensive spay-and-neuter programme – which is precisely what we’re calling on the Mauritian government to do.”

IAR and PETA have started a petition to stop these inhumane and senseless killings. You can sign it here. And please spread the word about this brutality in the hopes that it can be stopped.
